Fellowship & Assistantship
The ENE and the ESEN Programs offer a varying number of teaching and research assistantships.
Each full-time position pays $1,440 per month, and requires half-time (20 hours/week) work as
a teaching assistant or on a sponsored research project. Ph.D. and advanced students, i.e.,
those who have completed 30 semester hours or more by the beginning of their assistantship appointment
can start at a higher level of funding than entering graduate students. In addition, add-on funds
of $100 to $300 per month are sometimes available through the College's PRATT fellowship program.
Financial aid may also be available in the form of fellowships, tuition waivers and partial
assistantships.
The Via endowment, established in 1987, generated funding for graduate fellowships and other enrichment
programs for students and faculty. A limited number of full fellowships, as well as some add-on grants
are being awarded to outstanding graduate student applicants.
The fellowships generally require that the recipient be a U. S. citizen. Also, because of language
and adjustment problems, only the most outstanding foreign students are considered for assistantship
appointments before they have completed one or more semesters of satisfactory graduate work in
residence.

Tuition & Fees
Education and living costs at VPI&SU are comparatively low. For the
2003-2004 school year, in-state tuition for graduate students
is $3,019.50 per semester and out-of-state tuition is $4,854 in addition to regular fees. Out-of-state students receiving at least
$4,000 per year from an assistantship pay only in-state tuition.
The University fee (student activities/health service/bus fee) is $433 per semester. In addition, there is a one-time
lab fee of $125 for all environmental students. Graduate students normally live off-campus in private
rental units. Apartment rents range from about $440 (single bedroom) to $650 (three bedrooms)
per month.
